Everyone needs to be doing low back exercises. Yes. Everyone. Yes. You. 

If you want a strong core that means doing more than crunches and planks. It means incorporating low back exercises into your routine.

The core is the central or most important part of something. That’s what Google says. As a doctor, I’m here to tell you that “something” includes your body. The core is the basis of all your movement. If your core is weak – either the front or back –  you’ll likely have problems with movement.  Sometimes those “problems” mean pain, compensation in other areas of the body, or dysfunction.  

When you start training your lower back, you’ll benefit from better balance and coordination.  For athletes, movements will be more powerful and explosive for sports. Core strength improves balance.  Plus you’ll have overall better health and wellness. 

The type of low back exercises can vary based on your situation. A fit, healthy, active 20-something might do back extensions with weight for added resistance in the gym. Someone recovering from lower back surgery might just be trying to go from a seated to a standing position without falling down. It’s important to make sure you’re working with a trained professional to understand the best types of stretches and exercises to be doing to meet your goals.    

If you’re in pain when doing the exercise you’re doing it wrong. Pain could actually be an indicator that you have disc irritation and doing lower back extension exercises may make the problem worse and not better.   • One out of five falls causes a serious injury such as broken bones or a head injury.
  • Each year, 3 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries.
  • More than 800,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture.
  • Each year at least 300,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures.
  • Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
