‘Tis the season – for colds and the flu. Given the recent COVID-19 pandemic, we’re all likely to be on alert and doing what we can to avoid getting sick. Key to avoiding getting sick is taking external precautions and strengthening our internal defenses. Through COVID-19 we all took extreme precautions – wearing face covers, social distancing, taking vitamins, and getting plenty of rest. The media and medical system tend to focus on these external solutions. The truth is that we are exposed to an incalculable amount of germs, viruses, and bacteria every day.  It is impossible to avoid being exposed to pathogens. What we can control is the environment that the pathogen arrives in, i.e. our body!  It makes total sense to make sure that all of the external influences are either minimized or maximized to help prevent a flu/cold. What is often underutilized is the approach to strengthen up the internal defenses, which will prevent those nasty infections from getting a foothold in your system.

When we learn about viruses and disease, we hear the story of the germ. They’re everywhere. They want to kill you. You are powerless against them. But let’s instead focus on the story we don’t hear about – the story of resilience.

One of the great things about our bodies is the resilience we have within. We have been taught since as far back as we can remember to be afraid of the “bug” (germ). We are told to take “this” or do “that” to protect us from the bug. What we don’t get told is how bodies have a natural resilience to these germs. Germs also have resilience! The problem is now we are in this epic battle with these super-germs because they have built up resilience to the medications.

Chiropractic care helps the body reduce mechanical stress and stress to your nervous system.  When the body has less stressors, it can resist germs and viruses much more easily. We know that if 100 people are exposed to the same infectious agents only a certain percentage of those exposed people will become sick.  And of those that do become sick, some are totally knocked over and seriously ill,  and some get very sick and recover very quickly (a sign of a super potent immune system response!)

The easiest way to improve your resilience is to strengthen your nervous system.

Chiropractors are the only physicians who are trained to detect and remove Subluxations.  A Subluxation is a mechanical stressor that can cause harm to parts of your nervous systems.  Physiological stress is the ultimate cause of a majority of the medical problems we suffer from in the United States.  Americans are 5% of the population yet they consume 24% of the world’s pharmaceuticals. Why folks really appreciate the chiropractic we provide at Sonic Chiro is that we work WITH our patient’s body’s systems rather than against it.  People, in general, do not want more drugs and surgery and we take pride in using neither of those modalities.  It is common to think that the best time to go to a chiropractor is when you are in pain. But, only 10% of the human nervous system is related to pain.  Ninety percent of the human nervous system is devoted to movement, sensation, and your autonomic nervous system (which is all the functions of your immune system and digestion).  If you are waiting to see the chiropractor for pain alone you are definitely missing out!
